Humans stay in the driver’s seat

AI can be brilliant. Someone still has to decide what it is for, set the objective and answer for the result. That someone is human.

The idea

AI will generate whatever you ask for. It does not question the premise. That responsibility is still human. When output is cheap, the valuable part is whatever decides what the output is for, checks that it is right, and answers for it when it is not.

Output is cheap. The operator is the bottleneck.

AI is about people as much as technology. Workforces should be empowered, not replaced.

Humans managing teams of AI

Companies are not only adding tools. They are adding a new category of worker: AI agents doing real work in finance, HR, customer service, engineering and operations. The question becomes: who is managing the digital workforce?

No production agent without a clear business owner.

If an agent works in finance, finance stays accountable for the outcome. Technology provides the platform and the guardrails. Business accountability does not move because part of the work is now done by a machine.

Why it matters

Execution is no longer the constraint. Judgment is. Decision quality is. Clarity is. Ownership is. In organisations with strong judgment, AI multiplies impact. In organisations without it, AI multiplies noise.

Same tools, different operators. One kind of person uses AI to remove low-value work and puts the time back into thinking, deciding and relationships. The other produces twice as much and understands half of it.

In practice

  • People set the objective and define what good looks like, before any agent starts.
  • Every agent has an owner who knows what it does, what it can access, how it is measured and what happens when it is wrong.
  • Measure agents on performance, not on deployment.
  • Remove the effort that is waste. Protect the effort that is the work.
  • Train people to manage AI, not to compete with it.

From OG’s work

Across more than 3,000 bots at HP and DXC, the bots almost never caused the big failures. When something went badly wrong and the team traced it back, the root cause was almost always human: a tired person, poor communication, an outcome nobody owned. Why that shaped The OG Operating System.
