Motivation sucks. Trust discipline.

The core rule of The OG Operating System. Motivation is a feeling, and feelings are weather. You cannot run a system on weather.

The idea

In a production system, a scheduled job runs at six o’clock whether anyone feels like it or not. That is why it is reliable. The goal is to turn the important parts of your life and your work into six o’clock jobs.

Your problem is not effort. It is design.

A good system makes consistent behaviour the easy path. A bad system needs constant willpower to get the same result.

Why it matters

AI makes starting almost free: a plan, a prototype, a first chapter in one afternoon. Starting is no longer the rare skill. Continuing is: keeping the standard, checking the output, fixing the errors, showing up again on Wednesday.

The same goes for attention. AI makes removing effort cheap. Some effort is waste and should go. Some effort is the work itself. Remove that, and a company gets thinner, not faster.

In practice

  • Decide the standard when conditions are good, so it runs when they are not.
  • Install one behaviour at a time. Hold it for fourteen days. Add nothing until it holds under pressure.
  • When a routine gets boring, stay. Boredom is often the sign it has started to work.
  • When something breaks, fix the lowest failing layer first.

From OG’s life

OG has trained at least once a week for thirty years. He free-dives, where the routine prepared on land is what keeps you alive. He wrote it all down in The OG Operating System.
